Rules for Banner Stealing

Participating clubs must be full members of the association (EAASDC).

In order to ‘steal’ a club's banner, the visiting club must be present with at least one full square (four couples) at a regular dance evening of the host club. Visitors must introduce themselves to one of the board members of the host club and announce that they wish to ‘steal’ the club banner.

Visitors must spend at least half of the dance evening at the club they are visiting.

In order to get a ‘stolen’ banner back, a club must bring a complete square (four couples) to a regular dance evening of the club that now has the banner in its possession. If the visiting club also wants to ‘steal’ the banner of the visited club at the same time, it must bring at least two complete squares (eight couples).

Dancers who are members of both the host and visiting clubs may not be counted, either when ‘stealing’ or when retrieving.

If more than one club visits another club at the same time to ‘steal’ its banner, and if that club has only one banner, the banner will be given to the club that has travelled the furthest.

The banner should be presented to the visiting club by a member of the host club's executive committee.

Banners belonging to other clubs that the host club has at that time may not be ‘stolen’. Banners may not be ‘stolen’ at jamborees, round-ups or similar events. Furthermore, the ‘stealing’ of banners at special dances, graduations, anniversary dances and other open dance events is not permitted. The ‘stealing’ of banners may only take place during regular dance evenings.

The visiting club that ‘steals’ a banner is responsible for that banner. Clubs that do not retrieve their banner within one year must agree on a return arrangement with the other club.

Personal items of clothing may not be requested or given in exchange for a banner, but a club badge may be given in place of a banner if none is available.

The last and most important of these rules is that every participating dancer should always remember that these ‘stealing tours’ are intended to encourage visits between the individual clubs for the purpose of getting to know each other better and that they should always be conducted in a spirit of fun and friendship.
